Honduras here we come! We leave O'Hare tomorrow night at approximately 5pm central time. Have I packed yet?....ummm No. Oops. But either has Alisha so that makes me feel somewhat better. Living out of a backpack for 3 weeks limits yourself on what you can bring anyways. And you never want to overpack because that means you have to haul that extra weight around. You could say I'm not too worried about packing last minute. It makes it somewhat fun....or stressful. Whichever you'd like to make of it :)
Am I excited?....always. On our trip to Honduras we will be accompanied by 2 very close friends. Elizabeth, the childhood next door neighbor that practically lived at our house in the summer time, and our friend Sarah, who I met in Africa and I like to say is God sent. Both lovely, adventurous ladies, and will only make this trip even more awesome than it already could have been.
We will be starting out in the Ruins of Honduras, where we will be staying for about 4 nights. From there we will be traveling by bus to La Cieba. We will be camping out in this city for another 4 nights. Next stop will be Utila, which is an island off of the eastern coast of Honduras. I have to say that this is where I am most excited to travel. A woman from our church has a mother who lives in Utila, and we have been in contact with her for quite some time now. Unfortunately she will be traveling to the States while we are there, but she has definitely talked this island up! Here we will be scuba diving, snorkling, and kayaking. Not to mention the hostel where we are staying has its own private beach. From utila we will be taking a boat back to La Ceiba, and then on our way to Tela. Tela is supposed to be a beautiful place, so I am also very pumped to be there for a few nights. It is also the last city we will be in before we return home. My dad has an employee who is originally from Honduras, and when I stopped by his work one day he told me to visit his mother. He gave me directions to her home and everything. Now wouldn't that be fun if we were able to meet up with her!
Many have brought to my attention that Honduras can be a dangerous place. Now if you have also heard this, you are not entirely incorrect. However, be aware that where we are staying, and our transportation from place to place has been researched and reviewed. Anytime you are traveling to a different country, third world, or even first world, there is always danger. In our opinion, this does not make it a reason to not go completely. If you are smart and safe, and well traveled, as we are, you are most likely to be just fine. This also does not mean that we aren't asking for your prayers for a safe trip. Prayers are always welcomed and appreciated as we are going to an unfamiliar place for 3 and a half weeks.
To read about the activities of our trip follow this blog. I will try to blog as much as I can, but keep in mind my first priority will be to soak up everything Honduras has to offer :) Adios Wisconsin, Hola Honduras!
